What is a sintered stone countertop?

Sintered stone is a stone-based material that’s made to look like other materials, such as natural stones, tiles, wood, and other smooth or textured surfaces. Made of minerals, clay, feldspar, silica, and other natural mineral pigments, it is compacted and formed into a solid material by heat and/or pressure without melting it to the point of liquefaction.

Are sintered stone countertops scratch-resistant?

Due to the extreme pressure and heat used to manufacture the materials, sintered stone countertops are exceptionally hard. This makes sintered stone the most scratch resistant material on the market. It’s also exceptionally non-porous, making it highly resistant to germs, stains, and even heat. However, as with any surface, sintered stone can be damaged with extreme misuse.

How is sintered stone made?

Various stones, minerals, and other materials are first ground into a powder. Then, the mixture is subjected to specific amounts of heat and pressure to achieve the desired results. The atoms in the powder particles, when subjected to this stress, diffuse across the boundaries of the particles, fusing them together into one solid piece.
